Ogd_S(11) Translation Has Failed - doom/patience/drone/harley

Ogd_S(11) Translation Has Failed is multi-instrumentalist Nathan Hubbard's drone-doom project. Nathan was one of San Diego's most versatile musicians and composers. He has since moved to Arizona to shake up the music community there. Nathan has explored the dark regions of music before. He invoked demons with the experimental doom-noise group Rat's Nest. Laid down some unholy ground on the sludge opera, The Blind Dead. Confused us with black magic dirge via Steps Spiral Downward. June Gloom 2011 will witness the cursed afterbirth known as Ogd_S(11) Translation Has Failed.

Nathan took some time to answer a few questions for me.

What is the inspiration for naming your band Ogd_S(11) Translation Has Failed??

The name has several meanings, none of which I will reveal here. The name was chosen as a means to escape from the derivative names of most bands. I find that often these names set a strange preconception for the music - what would you think of Pavements music if the band was called Cannibal Corpse? Or would you take the Beach Boys more serious if they were still called the Pendletons? Follow that train of thought and you get the idea. I believe the bigger question should be "how is that pronounced?". or as Kalyman says, "it looks like hacker code".

You've played in many bands over the years. What specifically do you have planned for June Gloom and how will this performance differ from the others??

This group functions by improvising using various issues of tempo and altered interaction. Often the use of breakbeats is a starting point. At faster tempi the music shares sonic identities with various electronic genres and at slower tempi it shares much with doom and funeral doom genres. These slower areas will be the focus for June Gloom 2011. Akin to our use of an abstract name to escape labeling, i have never been a fan of genre placement and mention these thoughts only as a starting point for the listeners interaction with the music.

Also note that tempo is not only a rhythmic grid but a different look at passing time. Or as the press release says - "the template for tonight is - doom/patience/drone/harley". Harley being the bassist.

This will be our first performance focussing on slower tempos and will (hopefully) be the release concert for our new recording of this music entitled "Volume III".

You are a noted improviser but your last June Gloom performance was composed. What are the key differences between compositions and improvised music?? Which do you prefer??

Last year's JG performance was the group Steps Spiral Downward, which is an off-shoot of Ogd_S(11) Translation Has Failed. SSD takes the slow tempo impetus and develops it in a different direction - with melodic and lyric writing for (female) voice.

All music uses both improvisation and notation to varying degrees. I find excitement in the performance energy and real time interaction of improvisation and the crafted concept and exacting durations of notation. i take issue with the unfocussed structures of some improvisation and the "asleep at the wheel" performance of some notation. I have no preferences and use each (to various levels) in all of my projects.
